 A few years ago, a woman in a monochromatic linen ensemble stared down a blank wall, a symbol of ethical fashion.  who was she?  How did she end up there?  The emptiness of a beige wall caught her attention, or was it just the perfect foil for her impossibly crease-free linens?  I didn't give it much thought;  I was too busy wanting to be him.  I yearned to feel a sense of belonging in the ethical fashion arena, to be a monochromatic angel with no curls and that dazzling shine.

But really, I was the fat ladies who emailed designers asking them why they stopped at a size XXL when they insisted that their sustainably designed garments were here to save the planet.  I also wanted to save the planet.  I wanted to wear clothes that were consciously made.  I wanted to stare blankly at a blank wall knowing deep down in my heart how effortlessly calm I seemed.

Being plus-size means that so much of your experience in fashion is being strongly told how not to dress.  Don't wear horizontal lines, things that are too tight, things that are too loose.  Think of clothing more as fashion-adjacent camouflage.  Sometimes I wonder if I am being told all my life how to dress and how not to dress.  The clothes made me the ideal candidate for minimalist fashion.  There was no way to do it wrong—just make sure you mix your bone, sand, and muted olive-toned linens together.
